Genealogical research in Guam is challenging due to several reasons: The lack of historical records for the period between 1758 and 1897 make validating information difficult for anyone searching for ancestors during this time period; the change in the naming patterns brought about when Spanish Guam was ceded to the United States in 1898 and the destruction of church records, cemeteries and graveyards during WWII. The loss of a significant portion of the man’amko in the 19th century due to the flu epidemic also contributes to the challenges faced by those researching their family histories.
This document, a translation of a Spanish document mentions the sale of property in 1868 from Demetrio Perez to a Jose Blas Ascuncion, is the only document that we have found to date that references Demetrio Perez.
